Research program update December 2021

Research team members presenting

Research team members Gautam Wali and Kishore Kumar were both invited presenters to recent well-regarded symposiums held respectively by the European TreatHSP consortium https://www.treathsp.net/ and the Tom Wahlig Foundation https://www.hsp-info.de/ in Germany.

Presentations were made by researchers from Germany, Belgium, France, Spain, Italy, Austria, Canada, Australia and the USA about their work on the HSP.

Gautam was invited to speak about his current work and future plans for HSP biomarker development, while Kishore addressed the challenges and controversies facing HSP genetics in his presentation.

The review process for the clinical trial program continues, with the circumstances presented by the COVID-19 pandemic ongoing globally.

Meanwhile, important progress continues to be made in biomarker development with an expanded program covering more applications (diagnosis; disease severity; clinical trials; disease onset) and more HSP types. This is in the conceptual stage with plans expected to be drafted in the first quarter of 2022.

Alan Mackay-Sim and Gautam Wali are also currently writing a scientific research paper on the biomarker findings in SPG4.

The SPG7 research program moves forward with the long and labour-intensive process of induced pluripotent stem cell differentiation well underway. The desired end point of this phase is the production of cell cultures with predominantly induced SPG7 neurons that will provide the basis for further experimentation.

  1. I have been taking Noscapine for a couple of years. As long as I take it daily my symptoms are lessened. I am rationing what few tablets I have to one a week. Even that small amount is slightly effective.

    1. Greetings Carol, how did you obtain the NOSCAPINE you are taking? are they tablets, pills or syrup? What dose do you take to get these small improvements? I also suffer from Spastic Paraparesis, and I am from the SPG-4 group. What is your group? How can I get noscapine?
Kind regards, from Badalona, Spain. Jose Miguel

    1. Editor’s Note: We are not able to offer an opinion as there is no research or data that could help assess the potential of this compound for treating SPG6 or any of the other forms of HSP. As it is readily available without prescription as a supplement, you could talk with your doctor about trying it.

  3. Dear editor
i have read about icariin a herbal medicine. can we try it for hsp spg6?
How could it help with hsp.
I have read articles for hsp.
Please help me out regarding icariin. is it worth trying without any side effects?

    1. Editor’s Note: There has been significant mainstream scientific interest in this compound that has been used in traditional Chinese herbal medicine for a long time. As well as neurodegeneration, studies have been done on its efficacy with treating atherosclerosis. You may be referring to this recent publication regarding its potential for treating the HSPs: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8384151/. Questions on safety and effectiveness of this compound for treating HSP are unknown. As you know, it is a long and expensive process to scientifically answer these questions. It is best that you take this up with your own medical professionals regarding potential personal use. I have referred your question on and will post any responses here.
